The Silver Britannia from the Royal Mint is the United Kingdom's flagship silver investment coin – the silver counterpart to the gold Britannia – and one of the most technically sophisticated silver coins in the world. With 19 products at CelticGold spanning recent annual issues, the Silver Britannia combines 999/1,000 fine silver with an annual new design (from 2021) and the tincture-line security feature that makes it the most counterfeit-resistant mainstream silver bullion coin available.
History – From Sterling Silver to Pure 999
The Silver Britannia launched in 1997 in 958/1,000 (Britannia standard) fine silver – the traditional British standard used for silverware since medieval times. In 2013, the Royal Mint upgraded to 999/1,000 to match modern bullion coin standards and introduced the first security features. From 2021, the design changes annually and incorporates the tincture-line security pattern – a micro-engineered network of fine lines in the background field, invisible to the naked eye but revealing a colour shimmer under direct light that is practically impossible to counterfeit.
From 2023, the Britannia bears the portrait of King Charles III for the first time.
Pre-2013 Britannia (958/1,000) vs. modern (999/1,000)? The older Britannia standard (958.4/1,000) contains slightly less silver per declared gross weight. Modern 999/1,000 Britannias are the investment standard. Both are accepted at spot-based buyback. Is the tincture feature verifiable at home? Yes – tilt the coin under a direct light source; the background field shows a distinctive colour shift that standard blanks cannot replicate.
