Pforzheim's transformation into Germany's jewellery and precious metals centre began with a royal decree: in 1767, Margrave Karl Friedrich recognised the region's poverty and ordered the establishment of a watch and jewellery factory to create employment. Over the following two centuries, around 75% of all German jewellery companies settled in or around Pforzheim – creating an unrivalled industrial cluster.

Carl Heimerle founded his precious metals refinery in 1845 to serve this growing industry, initially recovering gold and silver from production waste. The metallurgical expertise built up over generations led to the development of standardised investment bars for private clients – today complemented by the innovative UnityBox: 50 individual 1 gram gold segments in a single presentation box, breakable for flexible use as gifts or investments.
