Buy Silver Krugerrand Coins – 50 Years of Gold History, Now in Silver
The Silver Krugerrand is one of the most historically significant coin launches of the 21st century. Issued for the first time ever in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the world's most famous bullion coin, the Silver Krugerrand brought Paul Kruger's portrait and the iconic Springbok antelope to silver for the first time in the coin's entire 50-year history. With 12 products at CelticGold spanning multiple years and editions, it carries the full heritage of the Krugerrand name in 999/1,000 fine silver.
History – 50 Years and a New Metal
The Gold Krugerrand launched on 3 July 1967 and went on to create the entire modern bullion coin market. For exactly 50 years, it existed only in gold. The 2017 Silver Krugerrand – issued to mark the golden anniversary – was therefore a global numismatic event: collectors who had waited half a century to hold Paul Kruger and the Springbok in silver could finally do so.
The Silver Krugerrand uses the same reverse design as the gold: Coert Steynberg's Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) – South Africa's national animal – in characteristic pronking pose, with the denomination in Afrikaans and English below. The obverse shows Paul Kruger's stern Victorian profile, unchanged since 1967.
Is the Silver Krugerrand the same design as the gold? Yes – same obverse (Paul Kruger portrait) and same reverse (Springbok by Coert Steynberg). The only differences are the metal and denomination. Are proof Silver Krugerrands more valuable? Proof editions with mirror-polish fields and frosted relief carry significant premiums over bullion strikes, particularly for the 2017 inaugural year.
