The Casa de Moneda de México was founded on 11 May 1535 by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza under orders from Emperor Charles I of Spain. Its first mandate: to coin the vast silver and gold extracted from Mexico's mines into standardised Spanish colonial currency. The Real de a Ocho (Spanish Pillar Dollar, "Pieces of Eight") – minted here in enormous quantities from Mexican and Andean silver – became the world's first truly global trade currency, used from Canton to Cadiz to the Caribbean.
The mint was the financial engine of the Spanish Empire in the Americas for nearly 300 years. The modern Gold Libertad (launched 1981) depicts the Ángel de la Independencia on the obverse – the golden-winged angel atop the column on Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma, commemorating the 1810–1821 War of Independence. The reverse bears the Mexican coat of arms: an eagle on a cactus devouring a serpent, directly from the founding myth of Tenochtitlán.

Why is the Gold Libertad so rare compared to other bullion coins?
