🇩🇪 20 Mark Emperor Wilhelm II Uniform Prussiagold coin – Later portrait depiction with military character

The 20 Mark gold coin from Prussia featuring the portrait of Emperor Wilhelm II in uniform belongs to the later issues of the German Empire and presents a modified depiction of the monarch. In contrast to the earlier issues, the emperor appears older and dressed in military attire, resulting in a distinctly different visual impression. This issue was minted at the Prussian mints, particularly in Berlin with the mint mark “A”, and follows the standardized specifications of imperial gold coinage.

The obverse shows a right-facing portrait of Wilhelm II in uniform. The depiction appears strong and clearly defined, with uniform details, collar, and contours rendered with precision. The facial features appear more mature and pronounced than in earlier portrayals. Surrounding it is the inscription “WILHELM II DEUTSCHER KAISER KÖNIG V. PREUSSEN”, which fully encloses the portrait and clearly states the ruler’s position.

The reverse features the imperial eagle of the German Empire with outstretched wings. Above the eagle is the imperial crown, while on its chest appears a shield bearing the Prussian eagle. Encircling the design are the inscriptions “DEUTSCHES REICH”, the respective year, and the denomination 20 MARK. The composition is clear and symmetrical, following the typical design principles of imperial coinage.

The minting quality is finely and precisely executed. The details of the uniform portrait as well as the structure of the eagle are cleanly modeled and clearly separated from one another. Light moves calmly across the surface and subtly highlights the individual design elements. The combination of smooth fields and structured details creates a balanced three-dimensional effect.

The coin consists of a gold alloy with a fineness of 900/1000 and has a total weight of approximately 7.96 grams. The fine gold content is around 7.16 grams. With a diameter of about 22.5 millimeters, the coin presents a balanced and stable form.

The design combines the personal depiction of the emperor in military appearance with the overarching state symbolism of the Empire. While the obverse emphasizes the portrait in uniform, the reverse complements the design with the imperial eagle, adding its political context.

In its entirety, this 20 Mark gold coin represents a clear and structured depiction of the later reign of Wilhelm II and reflects a calm, precise, and characterful example of minting artistry within the German Empire.
