Perth Mint

The Australian "The Perth Mint" is one of the oldest and most prestigious mints in the world. The mint began operations in 1899, and opened in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The Perth Mint was the last of three Australian colonial branches of the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint.

Between 1899 and 1931 the Perth Mint produced more than 106 million Gold Sovereigns and 735,000 half Sovereigns for use as circulation coins in Australia and across the British empire. Their portfolio includes a huge selection of gold and silver bars and coins. Some of the most popular include the well-known Kangaroo gold coins, Kangaroo silver coins, Lunar II gold coins, Lunar II silver coins, and Kookaburra and Koala coins.

Manufacturing

In the manufacture of 20g gold bars plates of gold, in a certain strength, are rolled. From these plates, the blanks for the gold bars are then punched out. The blanks are then checked for their weight and placed in a stamping ring and embossed by hydraulic press under high pressure. The stamping gives the bars their final shape and lettering. The inscription on the front shows the logo, fine weight, fineness and the precious metal indication. The back shows kangaroo depictions since 2010.

Tax

20g gold bars can be purchased free of VAT, provided that they have at least a fineness of 995/1000.
