The Silver Krugerrand is a globally recognised bullion coin from South Africa, first minted in silver in 2017 as an extension of the original gold Krugerrand, which debuted in 1967. Named after former South African President Paul Kruger and the country’s currency, the rand, the coin celebrates Kruger’s legacy as a key figure in South African history. Born in 1825, Paul Kruger served as the third President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.
The obverse of the 2024 Silver Krugerrand features a portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz in 1892, with the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” (Afrikaans for South Africa) and “SOUTH AFRICA” in English encircling the image.
On the reverse, the coin depicts a springbok, a graceful antelope native to South Africa. This design, created by Coert Steynberg in 1947, symbolises the country’s rich natural heritage. The reverse also includes the words “KRUGERRAND,” the year of mintage and the weight in ounces. The reverse design has remained consistent, with only subtle changes in the springbok’s details over the years, reinforcing the Krugerrand’s iconic status in the bullion world.
The 2024 Silver Krugerrand is struck from 1 troy ounce of fine silver with a purity of 999/1000. The coin measures 38.7 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 3.15 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in gold in weights of 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10oz. It is recognised as legal tender in South Africa, despite not displaying a face value.
With its historical significance and enduring design, the Krugerrand continues to hold a prominent place in the world of precious metal investments.
