The Royal Mint’s Myths and Legends collection never fails to delight and this new addition to the Arthurian inspired series is the enchanting Morgan le Fay, her mysterious character relayed in various versions of folklore and literature. Sometimes she is depicted as a being from another realm, as a goddess or faery, and some say she is a woman of mortal flesh. Sir Thomas Malory wrote of Morgan le Fay in ‘Le Morte d’Arthur’ as the half sister of King Arthur. In this version she is also a villain whereas in the version by Geoffrey of Monmouth, ‘Vita Merlini’, she is portrayed as a benevolent force, a healer who lived on the Isle of Avalon. There is also the belief that she is the mother of Oberon, king of the faeries. Whoever she is or was, she is certainly captivating!
The reverse of the coin was designed by the well-established illustrator, David Lawrence. It displays Morgan le Fay in a stance suggesting that she is ready for sorcery. She is dressed in a small waistcoat, laced up at the front and wears a winged headdress and an arm cuff with a serpent wrapped around her right arm. The background includes a hexurity feature for added security. Surrounding the image is the name, ‘Morgan le Fay’ in capital letters, plus the weight, the purity of the silver and the year of issue.
The obverse displays the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings. The king is facing to the left to keep with the tradition of each new monarch facing the opposite way to the previous one.
The coin contains one troy ounce of fine silver with a metric equivalent of 31.10 grams and a purity of 999.9/1000. It has a diameter of 38.61mm and a thickness of 3.00mm. The face value is two pounds sterling. The Morgan le Fay design is also available as a 1oz Gold Bullion Coin.
This wonderful edition to the series is a must for collectors, a piece of history that offers magic and intrigue, created by exceptional craftsmen and minted to the highest quality.
