Appearance
The silver coin has an edge bar and rippled edge. The edge bar is necessary for stability, in addition it protects the design from damage and improves stackability.
Front
The front shows a motive of a cougar leaping in the air. The background is decorated like the Maple Leaf Silver and Maple Leaf gold coins, with radial lines from the center inside to the outside. The radial lines serve two purposes, one as a design feature and two as a prevention against counterfeiting. Furthermore below the cougar is a safety feature in the form of a small maple leaf, embossed by laser with the year "16" imprinted. This laser engram is only visible with a magnifying lense. The inscription above the motif reads the Country "Canada" and the fine weight "9999". On the edge side, below the motif, the following words are inscribed "Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur".
Back
As with most Commonwealth coins, the back shows an illustration of Queen Elizabeth II. The background show radial outwardly leading fine lines. The label depicts the name of the ruler of the United Kingdom "Elizabeth II", the face value "5 DOLLAR", the year of issue "2016" and "D G Regina" which means "Queen by the grace of God" (Dei Gratia Regina).
Predator Series Silver Coins
The silver Cougar 1oz 2016 is the first coin of the new "Predator" series by the Royal Canadian Mint. It was presented at the "World Money Fair 2016" in Berlin. It is the direct successor of the very successful " 'Canadian Wildlife" series from 2011 to 2013 and the "Birds of Prey" series from the years 2014 and 2015.
