The Perth Mint is recognised as the official bullion mint of Australia, it was founded in 1899 and is owned by the Government of Western Australia. Over the decades, it has earned a reputation for its outstanding craftsmanship and dedication to minting excellence.
The Kangaroo bullion coin was initially launched as the Gold Nugget in 1986 but was redesigned in 1990 to showcase the kangaroo, due to the animal’s widespread appeal and its status as a quintessential symbol of Australia. In 2015, the Perth Mint expanded its offerings with the introduction of the silver Kangaroo bullion coin.
The reverse of the Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin 2024 displays the adult kangaroo mid-hop with stylised rays behind it. The inscription includes the word 'Kangaroo', together with details of the coin's weight and purity. The mintmark 'P125' signifies the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint. The coin also includes an enhanced security feature of a micro-laser engraved letter, which is only visible using magnification.
The obverse features his Majesty King Charles III, the low relief portrait was crafted by Dan Thorne and has a textured background. The surrounding legend has a background of wavy lines and includes the text ‘ ᐧ CHARLES III AUSTRALIA ᐧ ‘ and ‘1 DOLLAR’. The coin is recognised as legal tender in Australia.
