The emu is a giant bird that is unable to fly but it can run very fast and is able to reach speeds of up to 50 km per hour.
The reverse of the Australian Emu 1oz Silver Coin 2022 features an emu vigilantly overseeing her young. The intricate design showcases the birds' protective plumage, which is crucial for their survival in the extreme temperature fluctuations of the outback. It was designed by Neil Hollis and his initials are included to the right of the bird with the Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark to the left. The coin’s weight, purity, and year of issue are also displayed.
For added security, the coin includes an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. This tiny detail, visible under a magnifying glass, is intended to significantly reduce the likelihood of counterfeiting.
The obverse of the coin showcases an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark encircled by details of the coin's monetary value, one Australian dollar, in the legend. The coin is recognised as legal tender in Australia.
