The Somalia Elephant Gold coin series was introduced in 2010 and is also issued in silver. Every year the design changes but will always depict one or more elephants in their natural environment. The motifs of the gold and silver issues are identical for each annual edition.

The Bavarian State Mint is responsible for producing the coins on behalf of the Republic of Somalia. The Bavarian State Mint is headquartered in Munich, Germany and is one of the oldest and most respected Mints in Europe.

Somalia Elephant gold coins are beautifully designed and have a relatively small surcharge. The coins have been gaining in popularity with both investors and collectors from all over the world.

The Somalia Elephant 1oz Gold Coin 2012 is issued with a fineness of 999/1000 gold,  a weight of 31.102g and has a diameter of 38.7mm.

Design / Appearance

Motif:

The 2012 Somalia Elephant 1oz Gold Coin shows an elephant herd wandering across the African plains. In the foreground is a large elephant with two elephants and an African acacia tree in the background. The setting also shows a bird in flight.  

The motif is framed and highlighted by a contrasting border area. The border area bears the name of the series "African Wildlife", the edition "Elephant", the size "1oz", the chemical name for the precious metal "Au" (Aurum) and the fineness "999".

Value:

The value page shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Somalia, carried by two leopards. The coat of arms is set in a shield with a five-pointed crown. The leopards are depicted standing on crossed spears decorated with banners and palm fronds.

In the upper half of the value side, the issuing country "SOMALI REPUBLIC" is displayed. In the lower half on the border, is the nominal value "1000 SHILLINGS". The year is shown in the center to the left and right of the leopards. The motif is highlighted by a border of dots and the edge of the coin is ribbed.
