The United States Mint is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury responsible for producing coinage for the United States. It was established by the Coinage Act of 1792 and began operations in 1793. The first mint facility was in Philadelphia, which was then the capital of the United States. Over the years, the Mint expanded its operations to several facilities across the country, including Denver, San Francisco, and West Point.
The design of the American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin 2024 was introduced in 2021 and created by Jennie Norris. It features an exquisitely detailed close-up portrait of the head of a bald eagle. It beautifully highlights the majesty and dignity of the national bird, emphasising its keen gaze and powerful presence as a symbol of American strength and freedom. The inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the weight and denomination of the coin. Seven small stars are also included in the legend. The face value is 50 dollars and the coin is recognised as legal tender in the United States.
The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty striding confidently on the dawn of a new day with the sun’s rays and the US Capitol building behind her. Lady Liberty represents freedom and progress and above is the word “LIBERTY”. She is carrying a torch to symbolise enlightenment and an olive branch for peace. The year “2024” is shown to the right. Additionally fifty tiny stars are included around the inside of the rim to represent the 50 states of North America.
The American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin 2024 contains 1 troy ounce of 916/1000 gold, which is 22 karats, and has a metric fine weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 32.70 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.75 mm. The American Eagle bullion coin is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1 oz in silver.
