Its primary mission is to produce and distribute the nation's official circulating coinage, as well as to mint commemorative, collector, and bullion coins, and medals.

The Mint operates production facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point, and oversees the famous Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. Among its most recognized products are the American Eagle bullion coins in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

First authorized in 1792, the historic “Half Eagle” was one of the first gold coins produced by the US Mint. The “Liberty Head” $5 Half Eagle design was created in 1839 and was minted until 1908.

Design

The front side of the coin depicts the image of Lady Liberty. Surrounding the outer edge are 13 stars, representing the 13 original colonies. The year of issue is embossed below the portrait of Lady Liberty. The design was created by Christian Gobrecht.

The reverse side shows the eagle with outstretched wings. The inscription around the outer edge reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. The nominal value of “FIVE D” is engraved below the eagle.

The coins were produced at US Mint locations in Denver, Charlotte, Dahlonega, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Carson City and New Orleans.
