The Indian Head 2.5 Dollar Gold coin was minted from 1908-1915 and then again from 1925 to 1929. Both editions have the same design. Each coin has a purity of 90% gold and a weight of .12094 ounces.

The “Indian Head” gold coin replaced the Liberty Head 2.5 Dollar gold coin which had been minted since 1840.

Design

The front side of the coin depicts a Native American Male in a headdress. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the top outer edge. Around the outer edge are also 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies. The date of issue is engraved on the bottom outer edge.

The reverse shows the image of a standing eagle. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved along the top outer edge. The nominal value of “2 ½ DOLLARS” is below the eagle. Both the front and reverse sides were designed by Bela Lyon Pratt.
