The American Eagle shows the statue of liberty obverse and the Eagle inverse of the coin. This lovely coin along with the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonics one of the most respected and popular coins sold worldwide; minted by the United States Mint since 1986.

US Eagle Gold Coin Value

American Eagle gold bullion coins are legal tender under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The 1oz US Eagle Gold Coin is denominated with $50 face value and is 22 carat pure. Each 1oz US Eagle coin contains 31.10 grams of pure gold combined with small parts of other metals which make the coin more durable and resistant to scratches and marring.

Design and Production of the US Eagle Gold Coin

The US Mint guaranties the fine content of the US Eagle coin which makes it easy to trade the coin worldwide.

The US Mint was established, following formal authorisation by the U.S. Congress on 2 April 1792. The US Mint has four minting locations Denver, Philadelphia, San Franciso and West Point. All US Eagle and Buffalo coins are minted in West Point.

The design comes from Adolph A. Weinman who created the “Walking Liberty” design 1916 which was used for the ½ Dollar coins.

Obverse shows the “lady Liberty”, the traditional U.S. symbol of freedom, is encircled by 50 stars, representative of the 50 States in the U.S. The lady Liberty wears a loose tunic. Her long hair blows in the wind. She carries a torch (right hand) and an olive branch (left hand). Her left foot stands on a rock. Near her right foot is a representation of the Capitol building (where the U.S. Congress is based) in Washington. The lady Liberty design is based on that drawn by August Saint-Gauden for the $20 Double Eagle gold coin, issued over the period, 1907 – 1932. The design was modified for the American Eagle gold bullion coin by Matthew Peloso.

Reverse shows a family of eagles. The male, carrying an olive branch in its beak, flies above a nest containing a female eagle and two hatchlings. The eagle is a national emblem of the U.S. The design is by Miley Busiek. It was engraved by Sherl Winter.

The Eagle is minted in different fractional coins from 1/10oz to 1oz with a purity of 916.7/1000 or 22 carat.
