The Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2023 has a gold content of 31.1 grams, which corresponds to exactly one troy ounce of gold, the fineness of the Krugerrand is 916.67/1000, which equates to 22 karats. The addition of 8.34% copper gives the gold coin extremely good scratch resistance and the copper content gives the Krugerrand its famous reddish-gold colouring.
The appearance of the Krugerrand gold coins has not changed since 1967, only the year and the weight on the reverse are altered. The weights for Krugerrand gold coins are: 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, 1/10 ounce.
The obverse of the coin features the profile of Paul Krueger, President of the Republic of South Africa from 1882 to 1902, the image was designed by Otto Schultz in 1892. On his left is the inscription "SUID-AFRIKA" and on his right "SOUTH AFRICA".
The reverse of the Krugerrand bears the image of a springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa with “Krugerrand” inscribed above in capital letters. The year the coin was minted is displayed by splitting it with two digits either side of the image. The weight of the Krugerrand gold coin is displayed below the image and the lettering is displayed as "FYNGOUD 1OZ FINE GOLD".
