Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2022
Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
First minted in 1967, the Krugerrand was created to help market South African gold and has since become a symbol of quality and reliability in the precious metals market. The Krugerrand derives its name from Paul Kruger, a former South African President who served as President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900, and the rand which is the country's currency. Kruger was born in 1825 and played a pivotal role in late 19th-century South African history. He was affectionately known as "Oom Paul" and he staunchly opposed British imperialism during the Second Anglo-Boer War, emerging as a symbol of Afrikaner independence.
The obverse features a low relief portrait of Paul Kruger which was created by Otto Schultz in 1892. The inscription in the surrounding legend reads "SUID-AFRIKA" (South Africa in Afrikaans) and "SOUTH AFRICA" in English.
The reverse of the Krugerrand showcases a portrayal of a pronking springbok, an antelope native to South Africa. This design, created by Coert Steynberg in 1947, includes the inscription "KRUGERRAND" the year of minting and the weight. Since its inception the Krugerrand's reverse design has remained largely unchanged with only minor adjustments to the springbok's details over time. This beautiful design celebrates South Africa's diverse natural heritage.
The gold Krugerrand has a purity of 22 karats, equivalent to 917/1000. This higher copper content compared to 24 karat gold makes it more durable and gives it its distinctive reddish colour. Although the face value is not displayed on the Krugerrand it is still recognised as legal tender in South Africa.
The Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2022 is minted from 1 troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 31.10 grams. It has a diameter of 32.69 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
The Krugerrand is one of the world's most famous coins, renowned for its rich history and iconic design. Its unique blend of historical importance and aesthetic appeal has cemented its status as a cornerstone in the world of precious metal investments, attracting both collectors and investors.
