The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
Introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand was the first gold bullion coin to be issued for the private investor. The Krugerrand was a huge success and by 1980 it accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market. Today, the Krugerrand remains one of the most recognized and popular gold bullion coins in the world. The 2019 Krugerrand 1 oz gold coin has a purity of 91.67% gold (22 karat) and features the same classic design of Paul Kruger and the Springbok Antelope. The 2019 Krugerrand gold coin is available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz sizes. The name Krugerrand is derived from “Kruger”, the name of the former President of South Africa and “Rand”, the South African currency. The front side of the coin depicts the left side portrait of Paul Kruger, the former four term president of the South African Republic. The design was updated in 1984 and created by Otto Schultz. The inscriptions around the outer edge read “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”. The Krugerrands 22 karat gold-copper alloy is more durable than a pure gold coin and gives it better scratch resistance. The reverse side shows the Springbok Antelope, which is the national animal of South Africa. The name of the coin is engraved on the top outer edge “KRUGERRAND”. The year of issue is split on either side of the Springbok Antelope as “20” on the left and “19” on the right. The fine weight is on the bottom and reads “FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD”.
