Production levels of the Krugerrand have varied significantly since its introduction in 1967. Some yearly issues were minted in limited quantities and are difficult to come by. The 1998 edition is one of the years that was minted in small numbers.

The design of the Krugerrand features the portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of South Africa on the front side of the coin.
