Rand Refinery
Rand Refinery (Pty) Ltd, based in Germiston, South Africa, was founded in 1920 by the Chamber of Mines. It is the world’s largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex.
Its main function is the refining of raw gold to a purity of at least 99.5%, which is then used for cast or minted bar products, or as raw material for the production of Krugerrand coins.
The refinery is one of only five LBMA Good Delivery Referees worldwide – a mark of excellence that certifies the highest standards in quality, purity, and responsible sourcing.

Production levels of the Krugerrand have varied significantly since its introduction in 1967. Some yearly issues were minted in limited quantities and are difficult to come by. The 1998 edition is one of the years that was minted in small numbers.
