Rand Refinery
Rand Refinery (Pty) Ltd, located in Germiston, South Africa, was founded in 1920 by the Chamber of Mines. It is the world’s largest integrated single-site precious metals refinery and smelter. The refinery processes raw gold to a minimum purity of 99.5%, used for bars or as material for Krugerrand coins. It plays a central role in the global gold market. The Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 and has been one of the most successful gold bullion coin programs in the world. It is estimated that over 50 million ounces of Gold Krugerrands have been sold since its introduction.
Here we profile the 1978 issue, which was the largest mintage year at just over 6 million coins.
