The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom has built a reputation for outstanding craftsmanship and unique designs and the Myths and Legends series is no exception to this. The classic tale of Robin Hood is a popular story with those who believe the much loved outlaw was more than just a mythical character, thought to be a nobleman who believed in equality and became a champion of the common folk. First mentioned in 1377, the legend tells of a bandit who robbed the rich to help the poor along with his band of fellow outlaws called “Merry Men”. The story has its arch enemies, the cruel Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham as two of the main adversaries of Robin Hood. There is also Maid Marian, said to be his romantic interest, who is included in the Robin Hood collection in the Myths & Legends series, together with his loyal friend, Little John.
The obverse of the coin, designed by Jody Clark, is formed with meticulous attention to detail and depicts the famous archer poised on the branch of a tree with his large bow drawn back ready to shoot an arrow. The hooded figure has a sling of arrows over his shoulder and a sword at his hip. The image is raised and flows to the outer edge of the coin giving it a more life-like appearance. A micro-dot table texture in the background provides additional security against counterfeiting.
A portrait of Her Late Majesty The Queen, also designed by Jody Clark, is displayed on the reverse of the coin.
The Robin Hood 1oz Gold Coin 2021 contains 1 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold which equates to 31.10 grams with a diameter of 32.69mm. The 1oz Gold Bullion Coin has a face value of £100 and is presented in tubes of ten coins.
