The White Lion of Mortimer is one of the Queen’s Beasts that were present as statues to symbolically stand guard at the coronation of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. There are now replicas of the ten stone beasts displayed at Kew Gardens in London, England. The Queen’s Beasts White Lion of Mortimer 1oz Gold Coin 2020 is the seventh in the collection of the ten mythical creatures.
The reverse of the coin displays the White Lion of Mortimer holding a shield, on the shield is the symbol of the white rose of York with the sun’s rays shining out from behind. The sun is thought to represent good luck in battle. The image also details the lion’s claws extending out of the circle surrounding the image to the outer inscription area where it reads ‘ ᐧ WHITE LION OF MORTIMER ᐧ ’ together with the year 2020 separated by the lion’s head, therefore displaying 20 either side.
The obverse of the coin displays Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the surrounding inscription ‘ᐧ ELIZABETH II ᐧ D ᐧ G ᐧ REG ᐧ F ᐧ D ᐧ 100 POUNDS’ is abbreviated from the Latin DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSATRIX which means by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith. 100 pounds is the face value of the coin as it is legal tender in the UK.
