The name “Britannia” traces its origins to the ancient Greek term “Pretannia” which refers to the land and people of Britain. The Romans later personified Britannia as a goddess, a symbol of strength and national identity. Her image has graced British coinage for centuries, first reappearing in the late 17th century on the farthing after the fall of the Roman Empire. Traditionally depicted as a noble warrior, Britannia dons a Corinthian helmet and carries a trident and a shield emblazoned with the Union flag, reflecting Britain’s maritime power and resilience. Over time, her representation has evolved, adapting to cultural and historical shifts while remaining a steadfast emblem of British heritage.
The reverse of the coin features Britannia, a powerful symbol of Britain’s strength, unity and resilience. First introduced in 1987, this iconic design was created for the British Royal Mint by sculptor Philip Nathan, who drew inspiration from Britannia’s long-standing symbolic heritage. Her shield represents protection, the olive branch signifies peace and the trident highlights Britain’s maritime prowess. Over the years, this design has remained a defining feature of British coinage, embodying both tradition and national identity.
The obverse features Martin Jennings’ low-relief portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, depicted without a crown. The surrounding legend includes the face value of £100. This coin is recognised as legal tender in the UK.
The Britannia 1 oz Gold Coin 2025 features advanced security measures to prevent counterfeiting and ensure authenticity. A latent image shifts between a padlock and Britannia’s trident depending on the viewing angle, symbolising both security and maritime heritage. The background waves create an animated effect when the coin is tilted, adding depth to the design. Micro-text around the coin reads “DECUS ET TUTAMEN” meaning “An ornament and a safeguard” serving both as decoration and protection. Britannia’s shield also includes finely detailed tincture lines to highlight the Union flag. These elements make the 2025 Britannia one of the most secure bullion coins available.
The Britannia Charles 1oz Gold Coin 2025 is made of one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and has a metric weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 32.69 mm in diameter. The coin is also available in smaller weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz in gold, and 1 kilo and 1 oz in silver. The platinum version is available in weights of 1 oz and 1/10 oz.
With its prestigious design and historical importance, this coin is a valuable addition for both collectors and investors. A tribute to Britannia’s enduring legacy and Britain’s rich numismatic tradition, it combines aesthetic appeal with lasting worth in any collection or portfolio.
