The Vienna Philharmonic Gold coin is the official gold bullion coin of Austria and was first introduced in 1989. The coin is named after the world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and features the same iconic design every year.
The Vienna Philharmonic is one of the best selling gold bullion coins in the world. From the time of its introduction in 1989 until 2012 more than 9.6 million ounces of Philharmonic gold coins have been sold.
The 2019 Vienna Philharmonic 1 oz Gold coin has a fineness 999.9 gold and is minted by the Austrian Mint.
In 1989 the face value of the 1 oz Gold Philharmonic was 2,000 Austrian Schillings and in 2002, with the adoption of the Euro currency, the face value was changed to 100 Euro.
The 2019 Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz sizes.
The motif side of the coin depicts the various instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which include the bassoon, harp, flute, cello (in the center) and 4 violins. The inscription on the top outer margin is in German and reads “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER”. Thomas Pesendorfer, the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, created the design on both sides of the coin.
The value side depicts the pipe organ in the famous Wiener Musikverein, which is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The engraving on the top outer edge is the country of origin “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH”.
