The Lunar II gold coin series features 12 annual editions based on the Chinese Zodiac. Each year depicts a different animal design from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The series began with the “Year of the Mouse” in 2008 and ends in 2019 with the “Year of the Pig”.
In Chinese culture, each animal is believed to influence the personality of the people born under its sign. 2009 is the “Year of the Ox” and those born under the rule of the Ox are said to be calm, confident and determined. The birth years of the Lunar Ox are 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, and 2009.

Design
The motif side of the coin depicts an Ox lying on piece of grass with bamboo leaves above. The Chinese character for Ox can be seen on the top portion of the coin. On the bottom outer edge is the inscription “Year of the Ox”. The Perth Mints signature “P” mint mark is in the upper left near the edge.
The value side shows the portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design was created by artist and engraver Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscriptions on the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”, the face value of “100 DOLLARS”, the year of issue “2009” and the fine weight and purity of “1 oz 9999 GOLD”.
