The Perth Mint in Australia was founded in 1899 as a colonial part of the British Royal Mint and is today owned by the Government of Western Australia. It has gained a reputation for excellence in both its design and production of bullion.
The Kangaroo bullion coin originally debuted as the Gold Nugget in 1986 and the Perth Mint has featured an annually changing kangaroo design on the coin since 1990. To promote the Kangaroo Bullion series, the Perth Mint introduced a 1-ton (1012 kg) Kangaroo Gold Coin with a purity of 99.99% in February 2012. The coin is on permanent display at the Perth Mint’s Gold Exhibition and has a face value of one million Australian Dollars.
The reverse of the coin depicts an adult kangaroo poised to leap over a dry creek bed. The exquisite artwork, by Wade Robinson, includes a windmill and a water storage tank, essential features of rural properties across the country. In addition to the coin's weight and fineness, the design features a 'P125' mintmark, commemorating the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Dan Thorne. The monetary denomination is displayed in the legend as ‘100 DOLLARS’. The coin is recognised as legal tender in Australia.
For enhanced security, the coin includes a micro laser-engraved authentication feature that is only visible under a magnifying glass.
The Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Gold Coin 2024 is minted from 1 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold with a metric weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 32.10 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.65 mm. The 2024 Kangaroo bullion coin is also available as a ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1 oz in silver.
