The Lunar II gold coin series from the Perth Mint features the animals in the 12 year Chinese Lunar Calendar. The series began in 2008 with the “Year of the Mouse” and ends in 2019 with the “Year of the Pig”.

2012 is the “Year of the Dragon”. The Dragon is the fifth sign in the Chinese Zodiac and those born under its rule are said to be charismatic, determined and ambitious. The birth years of the Lunar Dragon are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1978, 1988, 2000 and 2012.

Product Highlights

  • The 2012 Lunar II Dragon 1 oz gold coin is 99.99% pure gold and has a limited mintage of 30,000 coins.

  • The motif side of the coin depicts a dragon with four legs. The “pearl of wisdom” can be seen to the right of the dragon. The Chinese character for dragon and the inscription “Year of the Dragon” is on the bottom portion of the coin.

  • The value side shows the right side portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing a royal crown. The engravings around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”, the face value of “100 DOLLARS”, the date of issue “2012” and the fine weight and purity “1 oz 9999 GOLD”.

Chinese Lunar Calendar

The ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back to 2,600 BC. The calendar is based upon the appearance of the new moon and it associates a different animal with each year in the 12 year cycle.

In Chinese culture each animal is believed to influence the people born under its rule. The 12 animals in order are the Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Money, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
