Perth Mint
The Perth Mint is one of the world’s most renowned precious metal mints. Founded in 1899 in Perth, Australia, as a branch of the British Royal Mint, it is now owned by the Government of Western Australia. The mint specializes in the production of bullion bars, collector coins, and investment coins made from gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
The Perth Mint is especially well known for its “Australian Kangaroo,” “Koala,” and “Lunar” coin series.

Since starting their own production of in 1986, Australia have become one of the leading manufacturers of bullion coins in the world. In 1986 Australia decided to produce their own gold coin after the import ban of the South African Krugerrand. Initially the coins were struck with images from iconic gold nuggets found on the continent. This changed to the more recognisable Kangaroo in 1989. They are some of the few legal tender coins that change their designs yearly.
The Australian Kangaroo is considered a 24K gold coin. Made up of almost one hundred percent gold, the gold coin is corrosion-resistant and retains its colour even after many years. A negative connotation is of course, that gold is a very soft material and thus is not as scratch resistant as some other metals.
Design/Appearance
This 1 oz coin features two Kangaroos both hopping to the left. Inscribed around the edge of the coin is ‘The Australian Nugget’ Along with the year, and denomination, and purity.
The obverse features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf.
