The 1990 1oz gold coin, the first to feature Australia’s indigenous, and well known Kangaroo, the largest species from marsupial family. These coins published by the highly regarded Perth Mint, established in 1899, is one of the oldest mints to still operate in the original premises, they produce some of the highest quality bullion coins in the world.
The first coins in the series were published between 1986-1989 featured images of famous Gold Nuggets found in Australia. From 1990 the design changed to that of the Kangaroo, which made it more recognisable as a coin from Australia. It also makes it more appealing to investors and collectors, as the coins are beautifully designed, and it’s one of the few coins which image changes yearly.
The 1990 Gold Kangaroo features the side profile of Kangaroo hopping to the left, with words ‘Red Kangaroo’ inscribed below. Around the border of the coin is the engraving ‘The Australian Nugget’ along with the year, and weight.
The obverse of the coin features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
