The Lunar I Gold Coin series was issued from 1996-2007 and celebrates the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Each year features a different animal from the Chinese Zodiac. The “Dragon” is the fifth coin in the series and was issued in the year 2000.

In the Chinese Zodiac the dragon symbolizes strength, power and good fortune. The birth years of the Chinese Dragon are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024.

Product Highlights

  • The year 2000 Dragon 1 oz gold coin has a fineness of .9999 gold and a maximum mintage of 30,000 coins.

  • The Lunar Dragon is produced by the Perth Mint, which is one of the most respected mints in the world.

  • The Dragon is one of the oldest and most powerful symbols in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

The front side of the coin depicts a flying dragon with a flaming pearl. Flaming pearls are often shown with Chinese Dragons and represent wisdom, prosperity and spiritual energy. Surrounding the dragon are clouds and birds.

The year of issue “2000”, is shown vertically in the left quadrant of the coin. The fine weight and purity is engraved as “1 OZ 9999 GOLD” on the bottom. The Chinese character for dragon is shown in the upper right portion of the coin.

The reverse side shows the right side portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of the Queen was created by Ian Rank-Broadley, who’s initials appear below the image. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA” and the nominal value of “100 DOLLARS”. There is also an ornamental circle of dots that surrounds the outer edge on both sides of the coin.
