Call of the Wild gold coins from the Royal Canadian Mint were first introduced in 2014. The coins highlight the vast wildlife that live in the Canadian forests and mountains. The inaugural edition of the Call of the Wild series is the Howling Wolf. The motif side of the coin depicts the head of a howling grey wolf. The background consists of wavy ripples and the inscriptions along the outer edge read “CANADA” “Fine Gold 99999” and “1OZ OR PUR”.  

A micro-engraved maple leaf is below the motif and is one of the cutting edge security features used by the Royal Canadian Mint to protect against counterfeiting. The coin has a ribbed edge bar that is slightly raised which protects the coins surface.

The value side depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The engravings read, the name of the Regent “Elizabeth II, the year of issue “2014”, and the nominal value of “200 Dollars”.

The Canadian Wolf lives in packs with a dominant male and female along with the previous year's offspring. When the wolf pack travel, the faster and stronger wolves will be at the back of the line to ensure that the rest of the pack is looked after. A wolf pack can be as large as 36, however, more common packs number between 5-12.

The Growling Cougar (2015)

The Growling Cougar is the second release in the Call of the Wild series. The motif is similar to the Howling Wolf, but instead shows the head of a Roaring Canadian Cougar. The coin background is also rippled, which is an added security feature.

The inscriptions around the outer edge read “CANADA” “FINE GOLD 99999” and “1OZ OR PUR” The laser engraved maple leaf is located just below the roaring cougar. To the right of the maple leaf is the initials of artist, Pierre Leduc, who designed the motif.

The value side of the coin has the same design as the Howling Wolf. The motif displays a right side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The motif was designed by artist Susanna Blunt in 2003. The engravings surrounding the outer edge of the coin include “Elizabeth II” “200 Dollars” and “2015”

The cougar is Canada’s largest and most powerful wildcat. It is also known as a mountain lion and puma. Adult cougars can weigh up to 60 kilograms and can be 2 metres in length. The Canadian Cougar mostly lives in the Ontario region where there are large forests with little human activity.

The Roaring Grizzly (2016)

The Roaring Grizzly is the third coin of the Call of the Wild coin series. The motif on the front side features the head of a roaring grizzly bear. The wavy rippled background is consistent with the first two coins in the series. The coin is also equipped with the micro-engraved maple leaf located below the motif.

Around the top outer edge of the coin is the country of origin “CANADA”. Around the bottom outer edge are the letters “FINE GOLD 99999 1OZ OR PUR”. Canadian artist Pierre Leduc is also the designer of this edition.

The Value side is slightly different than the previous two editions. The motif features the right side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Around the outer edge are the inscriptions “Elizabeth II” “2016” “D G REGINA” and “200 DOLLARS”

Canadian Grizzly Bears are located mostly in British Columbia, Alberta, northern Saskatchewan and northeastern Manitoba. Grizzly’s can grow to weigh as much as 270 kg. It is estimated that there are around 26,000 grizzly bears in Canada and they have a life-span of between 20-30 years.

The Bulging Elk (2017)

The Bulging Elk is the fourth coin in the Call of the Wild coin series from the Royal Canadian Mint. The motif features a right side portrait of the majestic elk. The elks antlers are highlighted in the design, as the elk raises his head toward the sky with mouth open. In the background are rounded rippled waves that act as an added security feature. Below the elk are the initials of coin designer and artist Pierre Leduc.

The value side of the coin features the right side profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions along the outer edge are the same as the 2016 edition. The only difference is the year of issue which is engraved as “2017” and is above the motif. As with the other editions, the profile of Her Majesty is from artist Susanna Blunt.

The Elk is one of the largest deer species and land animals in North America. It is also commonly called a moose. The Elk is often found mostly in Alberta and Ontario, but is also spread across most regions in Canada. Only the males have antlers, which can grow to become as large as 1.3 m and weigh 18 kg.

The Golden Eagle (2018)

The newest Call of the Wild gold coin is the Golden Eagle. The design has a similar format to the other coins in the series. The main motif features a detailed image of the head of a Golden Canadian Eagle. The background consists of wavy ripples, which is an added security feature that helps prevent counterfeiting.

The inscriptions around the outer edge read “CANADA” “FINE GOLD 99999” and “1OZ OR PUR”. Also displayed is the micro-engraved maple leaf and the initials of coin designer Pierre Leduc.

The value side features the same design as the previous two editions. The only difference is the year of issue, which is engraved as “2018” along the top outer edge of the coin.

Royal Canadian Mint

The history of the Royal Canadian Mint began in 1908 when it first started to produce Gold Sovereigns for the Royal Mint in London. The coins were created at the Ottawa branch and featured a “C”, which stood for Canada.

The first Canadian coins were minted in 1912, when the Department of Finance, directed the production of 8,000 five dollar and 8,000 ten dollar gold coins. These were the first coins that with the “Canada” inscription.

In 1931, the mint negotiated its independence from the Royal Mint London and changed its name from the Ottawa Mint to the Royal Canadian Mint.
