History and Development
Valcambi SA, headquartered in Balerna, is an international divesting institution from Switzerland. The company refines gold, silver, platinum and palladium and manufactures various bars, coins and medals as well as semi-finished products for the jewellery and watch industries
In the Swiss canton of Ticino in May 1961, five businessmen founded the refiner Valori & Cambi. In 1967, the Swiss Credit Institution (today Credit Suisse) acquired fifty percent of its shares, and a further 30% in the following year.
Two years later, the company became entirely owned by the Swiss credit institution. During the following years, most of the Valcambi gold bars were produced with the Bank's logo and distributed through their branch network.
However, Credit Suisse divested itself from the international precious metal business in 2003 and Valcambi SA was sold to a newly established entity, the European Gold Refineries Holding SA (EGR).
In 2004 US mining company Newmont Minting Corporation, the second largest gold producer in the world, became the majority shareholder in Valcambi. 2015 was a major turning point when Newmont sold its 60.6% share in Valcambi to a subsidiary of the Indian precious metal group and jewellery producer Rajesh Exports.
As a result of larger investments, in which Credit Suisse once again played a major role, Valcambi has been able to expand its business and today is one of the largest producers in the industry.
For German refiner ESG and Heimerle + Meule, Valcambi produces minted gold bars and the 50 x 1 g Combi bar. Valcambi also manufactures the internationally recognized London Gold Exchange 400 oz good delivery trading bar.
For all countries, except Germany and Austria, Valcambi has also secured the sole exclusive distribution and production rights for panel bars from ESG and is successfully selling the product brand under the brand name CombiBar.
