The Gold Libertad is the most structurally scarce major gold bullion coin in the world. Struck by the Casa de Moneda de México – the oldest continuously operating mint in the Americas (founded 1535) – with annual mintages often under 10,000 pieces per denomination, the Libertad commands strong secondary-market premiums from a global collector base. With 10 products at CelticGold spanning all standard sizes, it represents the full range of Mexico's gold bullion programme.
History – 490 Years of Continuous Minting
The Casa de Moneda de México was founded on 11 May 1535 by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza under Charles I of Spain, making it 26 years older than the US Mint (1792). For nearly 300 years it minted the Real de a Ocho (Pieces of Eight) – history's first truly global trade currency, used from Canton to Cadiz to the Caribbean.
The modern Gold Libertad (launched 1981) depicts the Ángel de la Independencia on the obverse – the golden-winged angel atop the monument on Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma. The reverse bears the Mexican coat of arms: an eagle on a cactus devouring a serpent, directly from the Aztec founding myth of Tenochtitlán.
What makes the Libertad unique: deliberately limited mintages – sometimes fewer than 3,000 pieces of the 1/2 oz or 1/4 oz globally. This structural scarcity means sold-out years trade at substantial premiums far above their raw gold content.
Why is the Libertad less liquid than Maple Leaf or Krugerrand?
Its very small mintages make it a specialist collector item rather than a mass-market bullion coin. All specialist bullion dealers buy it, but instant buyback without advance notice is less guaranteed than for major series. This is the trade-off for owning one of the world's most naturally scarce bullion coins.
Is the Gold Libertad VAT-exempt?
Yes – 999/1,000 fineness with Mexican legal tender status qualifies it fully as investment gold under the EU VAT Directive.
