Buy German Gold Coins – From the Goldmark to Modern Commemoratives
Germany is the largest European nation for gold coin variety, with 109 products at CelticGold spanning over 150 years of German numismatic history – from the iconic 20 Mark Goldmark of the Kaiser era to the Federal Republic's annual commemorative programme. The range is divided into two distinct eras: the Imperial period (1871–1918), when gold was Germany's official currency, and the modern Federal Republic (from 1999), which produces gold collector coins marking UNESCO World Heritage Sites, German flora and important cultural milestones.
History – The Goldmark and Germany's Golden Century
Germany's gold coinage tradition was codified by Bismarck's monetary reform of 1871: the newly unified German Empire established the Goldmark as its currency standard, with gold coins minted in denominations of 5 Mark, 10 Mark and 20 Mark. Every German state – Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Baden, Württemberg and many smaller principalities – was entitled to mint gold coins to the common standard, all with the imperial eagle on the reverse and the respective state ruler on the obverse.
The 20 Mark Goldmark (7.168 g fine gold, 900/1,000 alloy) became Germany's primary gold coin. Kaiser Wilhelm II (1888–1918) appears on more German gold coins than any other ruler, followed by his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm I (1871–1888). Prussian coins far outnumber those of other states. These historical coins are today genuine collector pieces prized for their numismatic value and imperial-era significance.
The Federal Republic launched its modern gold programme in 2002 with 100 Euro gold coins commemorating UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany – Cologne Cathedral, Museumsinsel Berlin, the Wartburg, Trier, Potsdam parks. Since then, the programme has expanded to include 50 Euro and 20 Euro denominations, as well as 200 Euro special issues.

Are Kaiserreich gold coins (10 Mark, 20 Mark) a good investment?
Yes – they combine numismatic collector value with intrinsic gold value. The 20 Mark is particularly sought after globally; specific states (Bavaria, Saxony, Hamburg) and condition grades command premiums above face gold value. All are VAT-exempt as investment gold.
What is the 100 Euro UNESCO gold coin?
Germany's flagship commemorative gold programme, issued since 2002 at 999.9/1,000 fineness (15.5517 g fine gold per coin). Each issue honours a German UNESCO site; annual limited mintage of 500,000–1,000,000 coins. Popular as gifts and collector investments. Sell to CelticGold.
