The Queen’s Beasts White Lion of Mortimer 2oz Silver Coin 2020 features a white lion with a shield depicting a white rose surrounded by a radiant golden sun, known in heraldry as a 'white rose en soleil.' This emblem is actually a fusion of two separate badges, both of which are evident on the Great Seals of Edward IV and Richard III, and were also adopted by George VI during his time as Duke of York. The design was skilfully crafted by Jody Clark and displays the lion’s flowing mane, its strong muscles and its fierce-looking expression with its sharp teeth bared. The design also includes a chainmail background. The legend is inscribed with the name “WHITE LION OF MORTIMER” together with the weight, purity of the silver and the year of issue.
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, also by Jody Clark, is displayed on the obverse together with the face value of the coin of 5 pounds sterling. The coin is recognised as legal tender in the United Kingdom.
