The Queen’s Beasts are ten heraldic statues that were unveiled during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953 and represent her ancestry.

The Queen’s Beasts series from the Royal Mint was first introduced in 2016. The series began with the “Lion of England” and will conclude with the “White Greyhound of Richmond”.

Product Highlights

  • The 2018 Queen’s Beasts “Red Dragon of Wales” 10 oz silver coin is the 3rd design in the series and has a fineness of 999.9/1000 silver.
  • The front side of the coin depicts a left profile view of a Dragon, which is one of the oldest symbols in British Heraldry. In the design the Dragon holds the British shield in its left claw. The engravings surrounding the outer edge read; “RED DRAGON OF WALES”, “10 OZ FINE SILVER 999.9” and “2018”.
  • The reverse side shows the right side portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of the Queen was created in 2015 by artist and engraver Jody Clark. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the nominal value of “10 POUNDS”, the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II” and the latin abbreviation “D G REG F D”.

Red Dragon of Wales

The symbol of the Red Dragon was used on the private seal of Owen Tudor, who was the grandfather of Henry VII and the founder of the Tudor dynasty.

In the design, the Red Dragon holds a shield depicting a lion in each quarter.

In 1959 Queen Elizabeth II made the Red Dragon with a green and white background the official flag of Wales.
