Issued by the prestigious Royal Mint, the first release of the 2018 "Queen's Beasts" Unicorn is available. Officially named the "Unicorn of Scotland", this is the fourth coin in the Queen’s Beasts series. This coin series appeals to both investors and collectors because of the beautiful motifs and the low premiums.
The Queen’s Beasts coin program from the Royal Mint is available in both gold and silver and represent hundreds of years of British heraldry.
Fine Weight and Fineness
"The Unicorn of Scotland" coin is part of the "The Queen's Beasts" series, launched in 2016. The silver coins of the "Queen's Beasts" are the first silver coins of the Royal Mint with a fine weight of 2 oz. The coin series is minted with a fineness of 999.9/1000 and a diameter of 38.61 mm. The coin has a nominal value of 5 Pounds (GBP).
Appearance
For coin stability and improved stackability, the Queen's Beasts series in silver has an edge bar and a rippled edge.
The front of the coin depicts a unicorn behind the coat of arms of Scotland. The unicorn is a popular felted animal in Scotland. The image of the unicorn carries a crown as a collar and is connected by a chain with the coat of arms.
The background of the motif consists of many intertwined links connected to chains similar to a chain shirt. The inscription, which is located on the edge of the rim, separating the motif from the border, reads: "Unicorn of Scotland • 2oz • Fine Silver • 999.9 • 2018”. The initials" JC "are embossed below the coat of arms, and represent the initials of coin designer Jody Clark from the Royal Mint.
The motif on the reverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II. The background consists of a coarse grained surface, which highlights the portrait in a special way and is very unusual for a coin. The label on the edge is "Elizabeth II • D • G • Reg • F • D • 5 Pounds".
Story
The “Queen’s Beasts” gold and silver series was introduced by the Royal Mint in the beginning of 2016. The Lion of England, "Queen's Beasts - The Lion", was selected as the first coin of the series in 2016.
“Queen’s Beasts” silver coins are available in 2oz and 10oz, and the gold series is issued in 1oz and ¼oz.
In 1953, on the occasion of the coronation of Elizabeth II, ten heraldic statues were created, which represent the family tree of Elisabeth (Genealogy). In total, the sculptor James Woodford (1893-1976) created 10 statues based on the former animals of the coat of arms of the United Kingdom, in the size of 1.83 m.
The statues were called "Queen’s Beasts." and the motifs of the series celebrate the heraldry of the United Kingdom. Each of the 10 planned coins in the series feature a version of one of the Queen’s Beasts statues present at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, representing her royal line of ancestry.

In mythology, the unicorn is given magical abilities. It is said to heal diseases and injuries, bring the dead back to life and to purify poisoned water. Unicorns are said to live in the forests and are considered immune to age and disease. However, they are very shy toward humans, but they can be tamed by young women. Therefore, the animals also symbolize virgin purity. The unicorn became the shield of the royal Scottish coat of arms because it was regarded as defenseless and immortal.
