Story
In
the beginning of 2016 the Royal Mint issued a new series of gold and
silver coins. The name of the series is "The Queen's Beasts". What’s
unique about this series is the silver coins are only available in 2 oz.
This is the first time an official 2 oz United Kingdom bullion coin has
been struck. The gold coins
are issued in 1 oz and ¼ oz. The theme of the first edition in 2016 is
the Lion of England. The official name of the coin series is "Queen's
Beasts 2016 - The Lion". The name "Queen's Beasts" is a term used
primarily in the UK and dates back to the year 1953. Ten heraldic
statues were created for the coronation of Elizabeth II, who had the
name "The Queen's Beasts". They were made to represent the genealogy
(pedigree) of Elizabeth II. The 1.83 m large statues were created by
sculptor James Woodford who lived from 1893 to 1976.
These are the statues:
- The Lion of England
- The Griffin of Edward III
- The Falcon of the Plantagenets
- The Black Bull of Clarence
- The Yale of Beaufort
- The White Lion of Mortimer
- The White Greyhound of Richmond
- The Red Dragon of Wales
- The Unicorn of Scotland
- The White Horse of Hanover
The Queen’s Beasts bullion coin series will consist of new designs based upon each of the 10 Heraldic Beasts. The first edition is the "Queen's Beasts 2016 - The Lion".
Appearance
The
2oz Queens Beast in silver has an edge bar and a rippled edge. The edge
bar gives the coin stability and improve stackability. Furthermore, the
slightly elevated edge rod protects the design from scratches and
damage. On the front side of the coin you can see a standing lion with
crown and shield. On the shield the first and fourth image of the emblem
of England are displayed. The Coat of Arms is a symbol that dates dates
back hundreds of years and is a rich part of English history. Displayed
in the second field is the coat of arms of Scotland and in the third
field, on the bottom left, the emblem of Ireland is shown (until 1927).
The background of the motif consists of chains that are intertwined (as was customary in a chain mail). The inscription surrounds the coin and is located in a smooth region between the edge bar and the interwinding chains.
The
inscription reads: "Lion of England • 2oz • Fine Silver • 9999 • 2016.
Beneath the coat of arms are the initials "JC" imprinted for artist Jody
Clark of the Royal Mint.
The reverse depicts a motif Queen Elizabeth II. The background consists of a coarse-grained surface, which is very unusual for a bullion coin. The marginal inscription is "Elizabeth II • D • G • Reg • F • D • 5 Pounds"
