The Lunar III series from the Perth Mint is a prestigious collection of coins that celebrates the Chinese zodiac. Each year, the mint releases coins featuring a different animal from the 12-year lunar cycle, starting with the Year of the Rat and ending with the Year of the Pig. These coins are struck in various precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, catering to both investors and collectors.
In the Chinese zodiac, the Rabbit represents qualities such as sensitivity, gentleness, and compassion. The reverse of the coin portrays the rabbit stretching up to reach a branch whilst the other sits and looks the other way. The design, by Ing Ing Jong, includes the Chinese character for the word rabbit and is also inscribed with ‘RABBIT 2023’ and the mintmark ‘P’.
On the obverse is Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the weight, purity and monetary denomination displayed in the surrounding legend. The coin has a face value of 8 AUD and is legal tender in Australia.
The Lunar III Rabbit 5oz Silver Coin 2023 measures 61.00 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 7.20 mm. It is also available in weights of 1 kilo, 2oz, 1oz and ½ oz. There is a gold version of the 2023 Lunar III Rabbit which has a different image on the reverse.
