The Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt (Bavarian State Mint), located in Munich, is one of the oldest still-operating mints in Germany. Officially established in 1871, its origins date back to the 12th century.
Today, the mint is responsible for producing German circulation, commemorative, and collector coins on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Coins minted in Munich bear the mint mark “D”.

🇸🇴 Somalia Elephant 2022 – 1/4 oz Gold Coin – African Wildlife in Fine Gold Minting
The Somalia Elephant 2022 – 1/4 oz gold coin belongs to the well-known African Wildlife series, which presents African elephants in annually changing designs. This coin program combines nature-inspired motifs with modern minting techniques and a clear, calm visual language. A defining characteristic of the series is the yearly changing elephant motif, while the overall structure and layout of the coin remain consistent over the years. The smaller denomination offers a compact format in which the motif still appears clearly and precisely executed.
The obverse shows the coat of arms of Somalia. Two leopards support a shield bearing a five-pointed star, beneath which appear crossed spears and palm fronds. Around the rim are the inscriptions indicating the issuing country, the denomination, and the year of issue 2022. The depiction is precisely modeled and clearly structured. The restrained design of the value side leaves space for the gold surface, creating a balanced overall appearance.
The reverse features the African elephant as the central motif of the coin. On the 2022 issue, an adult elephant is shown walking through the savanna together with a young calf. Birds can be seen in the sky above the scene, while typical trees of the African landscape appear in the background. The depiction feels calm and connected to nature. The powerful body of the elephant, the characteristic trunk, and the finely modeled skin texture give the design a sculptural depth.
Along the rim of the design side appear the inscriptions AFRICAN WILDLIFE and ELEPHANT, as well as the weight and fineness of the precious metal. The coin consists of 1/4 oz of fine gold with a purity of 999.9 and carries a face value of 200 Somali Shillings. Despite its compact size, the coin shows precise detail work.
The 1/4 oz denomination offers a compact form in which the motif still stands out clearly. Light moves across the finely modeled relief structures, giving the gold surface a calm and even appearance. The contours of the elephant and the texture of its skin are carefully executed, giving the depiction subtle depth.
