Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2025
Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The Krugerrand is a widely recognised bullion coin that was first issued in South Africa in 1967. Its name is derived from Paul Kruger, a former president of the South African Republic, and the country’s currency, the rand. Kruger, born in 1825, was a prominent political and military leader during the late 19th century. Serving as the republic’s president from 1883 to 1900, he became known for his resistance to British control during the Second Anglo-Boer War. Often referred to as “Oom Paul,” he remains an enduring figure in Afrikaner history and nationalism.
The obverse of the Krugerrand displays a portrait of Paul Kruger, originally designed by Otto Schultz in 1892. Encircling the image, the inscription reads “SUID-AFRIKA” (Afrikaans for South Africa) and “SOUTH AFRICA” in English.
The reverse of the Krugerrand showcases a pronking springbok, a gazelle-like antelope native to South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg in 1947. The inscriptions include “KRUGERRAND”, the year of mintage and the coin’s weight in ounces. Since its introduction, the reverse design has remained largely unchanged, with only subtle refinements to the springbok’s details over the years. This design symbolises South Africa’s rich natural heritage and enhances the Krugerrand’s iconic status.
The gold Krugerrand has a purity of 917/1000, with a high copper content that enhances its durability and gives it a distinctive reddish hue. Although it does not bear a face value, it is officially recognised as legal tender in South Africa.
The Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2025 is minted from 1 troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 31.10 grams. It has a diameter of 32.77 mm and a thickness of 2.84 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1 oz in silver.
The Krugerrand’s rich history, unique design and enduring reputation have firmly established it as one of the most recognised and sought-after bullion coins in the world. Its significance extends beyond its value as a precious metal investment, as it also represents South Africa’s numismatic heritage and economic influence in the global gold market. Over the decades, the Krugerrand has remained a symbol of stability and wealth, appealing to both collectors and investors.
