The Krugerrand was first minted by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery in 1967. It gets its name from the former President Paul Kruger and the currency of the rand. Paul Kruger was prominent in opposing British imperialism and was affectionately known as “Oom Paul” which is Afrikaans for “uncle Paul”. His term of office as President of the South African Republic ran from 1883 to 1900.
The obverse of the Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2021 showcases Otto Shultz’s 1892 portrait of the Paul Kruger. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” are inscribed in the legend in both English and Afrikaans. The Krugerrand is still recognised as legal tender in South Africa even though it does not display a face value.
The reverse of the coin features a pronking springbok antelope which is native to South Africa. The design was created in 1947 by Coert Steynberg and has remained the same over the years, with only a few minor changes. The word "KRUGERRAND" is inscribed above the image and the year of mintage is split as “20” on the left and “21” on the right. The words “FINE GOLD” are shown at the bottom in both English and Afrikaans together with the weight.
The Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin 2021 is minted from 1 troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 31.10 grams. The purity of the gold Krugerrand is 917/1000 or 22 karats. It has a high copper content to make it more durable, this also gives it the famous reddish hue. It has a diameter of 32.69 mm. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1 oz in silver.
