Wilhelmina was born in 1880 and ascended to the throne in 1890, after the death of her father Willem III. The first 10 Guilder gold coins minted during her reign were issued from 1892-1897. The 1897 edition was the largest mintage year with approximately 453,696 coins.
The coin depicts the portrait of young Wilhelmina who became Queen of the Netherlands at the age of 10 years old.
Design Highlights
The front side of the coin depicts young Queen Wilhelmina with flowing hair. The inscriptions around the outer edge read “GOD ZIJ MET ONS” and “KONINGIN WILHELMINA”.
The reverse side displays the coat of arms of the Netherlands. The lettering around the outer edge is “KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN”. The nominal value of “10 G” is on either side of the coat of arms. The date of issue “1897” is engraved at the bottom of the coin.
