The Royal Mint is the oldest company in Britain, founded in the late 800s, and owned by the British government. It is the leading export mint across the globe and the most technically advanced. The Queen’s Beasts Collection is a fine example of the exceptional craftsmanship that is demonstrated at the mint.
The Queen’s Beasts stood guard at the coronation of Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey, they are stone statues six feet (1.8 metres) tall created by James Woodford OBE RA (1893-1976). The collection was commissioned to represent the queen’s lineage and was inspired by the King’s Beasts at Hampton Court Palace. Replicas of the original statues are on display at Kew Gardens in London, England. Designer Jody Clark was given the task of designing the exquisitely crafted coins to celebrate these historical statues during his employment at the Royal Mint.
The Yale of Beaufort is the sixth coin in the Queen’s Beasts collection and the creature is displayed on the reverse of the coin, it resembles what is thought to be an antelope or a goat. However, the mythical animal has the tusks of a boar and the tail of an elephant. It stands on its hind legs and in front is a shield displaying a portcullis motif used by Henry VII.
The obverse displays a portrait of Elizabeth II, also designed by Jody Clark. It includes the denomination of the coin of 100 pounds as legal tender in the UK.
