🇩🇪 10 Mark Saxony 1908 – Gold Coin King Friedrich August III – Saxon Continuity in Warm Gold

The 10-mark gold coin of the Kingdom of Saxony bears the portrait of King Friedrich August III, the last Saxon monarch, whose reign from 1904 to 1918 guided the country through a phase of state order and regional identity. The 10-mark issues minted between 1908 and 1913 display the calm, factual-monarchic design language that characterized early 20th-century coin artistry – clear, contoured and without visual unrest. Struck in gold, the coin preserves a material radiance that does not shine loudly, but endures evenly, warmly and calmly.

The obverse shows the portrait of King Friedrich August III, facing right, with a finely modeled uniform depiction, factual linework and a composed, calm profile. The engraving emphasizes the contours of the face without exaggerating expression. Surrounding the profile runs the inscription “FRIEDRICH AUGUST KOENIG VON SACHSEN”, evenly arranged in a clearly legible typography. Beneath the portrait appears the mint mark “E”, representing the Muldenhütten Mint, finely embedded into the field. The calm, smooth gold surface surrounding the portrait forms a warm, optically balanced companion to the motif, leaving the profile enough space.

The reverse bears the crowned Saxon heraldic shield, supported by two upright lions with diamond-wreath ornamentation, whose depiction is marked in bold as the central motif detail. The lions flank the heraldic shield in a calm, orderly posture. The shield displays the traditional Saxon diamond pattern, a sovereign emblem of the state. Above the coat of arms is the denomination “10 MARK”, below it the respective minting year of the issue. An oak-leaf wreath surrounds the motif, its finely worked leaves also marked in bold as a defining motif detail. The leaves are evenly arranged and provide structure without appearing ornamental.

The coin is struck in 900 gold, the classic alloy of the imperial German period. The fine-gold content gives the coin a warm, bright tonality and a noticeable, concentrated weight. The relief is precisely crafted, without harsh contrasts. Light and shadow transitions arise softly and in flowing gradients. The reeded edge is a traditional tactile feature preserving the classic character of the mintings.

King Friedrich August III was regarded as a monarch of regional self-conception and political prudence. His coin portrait conveys exactly this: no exaggeration, but continuity, clear contours and Saxon order. The reverse follows the same language: coat of arms centered, natural frame at the edge, all held in calm arrangement.

Thus, the 10 Mark Saxony gold coin King Friedrich August III remains a historical witness of Saxon minting tradition – a piece preserving the identity of the state in warm gold, carried by calm lines and clear minting artistry.
