Call of the Wild gold coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2014. Each year highlights a different design that features the vast Canadian landscape and wilderness. The Bulging Elk (2017) is the fourth coin in the series and depicts the majestic elk as the main motif.
The elk is one of North America’s largest species of the deer family. One interesting fact about the male elk is that they shed their antlers every year. Canadian Elk live throughout all regions of Canada, but are mostly found in the Alberta and Ontario Providence.

Design
Designed by artist Pierre Leduc, the motif side of the coin depicts a majestic bulging elk with his head raised letting out a mating call. In the background are rippled waves that add to the beauty of the design. Surrounding the top outer edge are the country of origin “Canada” and the weight and purity “FINE GOLD 1OZ 99999 OR PUR”.
The value side depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions include the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the year of issue “2017”, the nominal value of “200 DOLLARS” and the phrase “D G REGINA”, which translates “By Grace of God, Queen”.
