Leopold ruled Belgium from 1831 to 1865 and was the first King of Belgium after the country achieved independence from the Netherlands. The 20 Franc Leopold gold coin was minted from 1834-1841 and then again in 1865. The 1865 edition is more available due to the higher mintage.

Design Highlights

  • The front side depicts the portrait of Leopold I of Belgium. The inscriptions around the outer edge are “LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES”. The translation reads “Leopold First King of the Belgians”.

  • The reverse side shows an ornamental circle made up of oak leaves. The nominal value of “20 Francs” and the date of issue is inscripted in the center.

  • The edge bar also has an inscription that reads “DIEU PROTEGE LA BELGIQUE”, which translates “God Protects Belgium”.
