The Münze Österreich (Austrian Mint) has been in operation since 1194 and is therefore one of the oldest mints in the world. It is most widely known for producing the iconic Vienna Philharmonic series and is renowned for its high minting standards. The Vienna Philharmonic coin was introduced in 1989 in gold and later became available in silver and platinum.
The obverse of the Vienna Philharmonic 1 oz Gold Coin 2022 showcases the famous Great Organ of the Golden Hall, part of the Vienna Musikverein which is the concert hall of the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The inscription reads "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria). The weight of the coin, its purity, monetary denomination and the year of issue are also included. The one ounce coin has a face value of 100 euros and is recognised as legal tender.
The reverse features an array of musical instruments which include a cello, four violins, a bassoon, a harp and a Viennese horn. The instruments represent the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the inscription shows the orchestra name in German, “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER".
The coin contains 1 troy ounce of 999.9/1000 fine gold which is equivalent to 31.10 grams of 24-karat gold. It measures 37.00 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.00 mm. The Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin is also available in weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/25 oz in gold and 1 oz in fine silver.
