Story
From 1870 to 1892, the Austrian Empire coined 4 Florin and 8 Florin gold coins. In order to facilitate trade between several European countries, coins were given two nominal values: 4 Florin (4 Fl), and 10 Swiss Francs (10Fr). The Latin Monetary Union was created by the founding states of France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland in 1865. As a result, the 4 Florin gold coin had a dual-denomination of 4 Florin (4Fl) and 10 francs (10 Fr) . Furthermore, Florin gold coins are officially minted by the Austrian Mint. All copies have the year 1892.
Design
The 4 Florin gold coins have a reddish gold color because of the ten percent share of copper. The coin has a smooth edge, as well as an edge bar, with a directly adjoining ornamental circle, which can be seen on both obverse and reverse. On the front is a portrait of Kaiser Franz Joseph I with the inscription "FRANCISCVS IOSEPHVS I D G IMPERIATOR ET REX". The back shows the average common crest of Austria-Hungary. Left of the coat of arms is the nominal value indication 4 Fl and to the right 10 Fr. Below the subject is the year of mintage. Around the edge the following inscription: "Imperivm AVSTRIACVM" is imprinted.
